Montage Technology (06809): From the "memory bear market" to CPU shipmentsafter the 9% rebound, the quality of the recovery still awaits Q4 validation.
If the profit alert addresses "whether the earnings disprove the pessimistic narrative," then the capital flows address "who is pricing it in, and at what level."
On October 20, Montage Technology (06809) issued a positive profit alert, expecting to record a profit of RMB 1.2 billion to 1.3 billion for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, representing year-on-year growth of 153.6% to 174.7%; revenue of approximately RMB 2.079 billion, up approximately 46% year on year.
On the first trading day after the profit alert, the company's share price rose nearly 9%. Against the backdrop of a maximum decline of approximately 70% in the preceding month, this single-day rebound appears to be a forced correction of the earlier pricing of "performance deceleration." Foreign banks also quickly gave positive feedback: Citi said in a research report that Montage Technology's preliminary third-quarter results far exceeded expectations, reiterating a "Buy" rating and a target price of HK$425; Goldman Sachs also issued a research report maintaining a "Buy" rating and an H-share target price of HK$500. Institutional ratings echoed the profit alert data, further reinforcing market expectations for a correction of the previously overly pessimistic pricing.
Breaking down the profit alert: what exceeded expectations was not just growth, but earnings quality
The market's first layer of expectation gap was on the profit side. Citi estimates that the midpoint of net profit of RMB 1.2 billion to 1.3 billion is about 34% above the market consensus and the bank's own forecast; Goldman Sachs' estimate is more aggressive, with the midpoint about 47% above market expectations. This means that in the preceding month's maximum decline of about 70%, the assumption implied by pricing was "performance deceleration," while the actual data not only did not decelerate but accelerated: second-quarter revenue and net profit grew 32.85% and 81.46% year on year, respectively, and in the third quarter jumped to more than 46% and 153%, respectively. The slope of growth itself is the most direct tool of falsification.
However, what truly deserves close reading in this profit alert is not the 153% to 174% profit growth itself, but the source of profit elasticity. The announcement attributed growth to the rapid implementation of AI inference and Agent applications, continued upward demand for server CPUs, which drove overall demand for memory modules and interconnect chips; shipments of DDR5 memory interface and module companion chips increased significantly, and the shipment share of third-, fourth-, and fifth-generation RCD chips further increased. Interconnect chip revenue in the quarter was approximately RMB 2.047 billion, up 49.3% year on year and 20.9% quarter on quarter; the gross margin guidance was 68.0% to 68.5%, up 2.31 to 2.81 percentage points year on year and continuing to improve quarter on quarter. Citi viewed the gross margin performance as a direct alleviation of concerns over rising foundry costs. The implication of this set of data is that growth is not driven by sacrificing price for volume, but by volume and price rising together driven by product mix upgrading, and the improvement in earnings quality is more convincing than revenue growth.
The deeper expectation gap lies in the question of "what Montage Technology relies on for growth," which the market has long misread. Over the past few months, Montage Technology has been widely embedded in the "memory cycle" pricing framework: earnings expectations of memory original manufacturers such as Samsung and SK Hynix fluctuated, memory spot price expectations wavered, and the company, as a memory interface chip supplier, was swept into the "memory bear market" narrative. But in its post-alert research report, Citi made a key distinction: Montage's memory interface business is mainly driven by CPU shipments and the number of memory channels, not by memory prices.
After the 9% rebound: foreign investors' early positioning and the quality of the recovery
If the profit alert addresses "whether performance falsifies the pessimistic narrative," then capital actions address "who is pricing and at what level."
HKEX disclosures show that JPMorgan's long position in Montage Technology H-shares rose from 7.06% to 7.35% on October 15, an increase of 0.29 percentage points. It is worth noting that this increase occurred before the profit alert announcement, in a window when the share price was still hovering at low levels, rather than chasing the rally after the news landed. During the same period, the short position ratio also rose from 2.64% to 3.06%, indicating that foreign investors were not making a one-way bet, but chose to add to directional positions at the stage of strongest pessimism. After the profit alert, the share price rose nearly 9%, and JPMorgan's early position thus gained a floating profit.
Institutional ratings reinforced this judgment after the profit alert. Goldman Sachs maintained "Buy," with target prices of HK$500 for H-shares and RMB 377 for A-shares; Citi reiterated "Buy," with target prices of HK$425 for H-shares and RMB 320 for A-shares; CLSA also maintained a "High Conviction Outperform" rating. JPMorgan's increase and the target prices of several foreign banks together constitute a dual validation of "fundamental anchor + early capital positioning."
However, a nearly 9% bullish candle does not automatically equal a trend reversal. Among the causes of the preceding month's decline, in addition to the sector-wide fading of memory sentiment, there is another thread that has not fully dissipated: South Korean prosecutors launched an on-site antitrust search of Montage's Korean office in July, investigating together with Renesas and Rambus whether they colluded on prices when supplying Samsung and SK Hynix. Montage announced that it is fully cooperating with the investigation and that, as of the disclosure date, neither the company nor its directors or employees had been formally accused, but it explicitly stated that "at this stage it is unable to predict the timing and outcome of the investigation." This uncertainty remains a layer of mist hanging over the valuation. In addition, the sustainability of AI infrastructure capital expenditure, potential adjustments to international customers' supply chain strategies, and the structural impact of alternative solutions such as SOCAMM and LPDDRX on memory interface demand are all risk variables listed by Citi alongside its bullish view.
The rebound on the first trading day after the profit alert was not a solo dance by Montage Technology; the Hong Kong storage and AI hardware sectors strengthened collectively that day, and the sector beta tailwind provided a window for the stock's alpha to materialize. But after sector sentiment fades, whether Montage Technology can continue to command excess pricing based on the fundamentals anchored by the profit alert is the true yardstick for testing the quality of this recovery. JPMorgan raised its shareholding from 7.06% to 7.35% before the profit alert, having already cast an "early" vote with real money; next, whether fourth-quarter interconnect chip demand can deliver management's further growth guidance will determine whether this 9% is an initial stitching of the valuation crack or the starting point of a new round of re-rating.
