Morgan Stanley maintains a "Neutral" rating on Tesla, Inc. (TSLA.US) ahead of Q3 earnings: Large-scale Robotaxi deployment remains a key catalyst, with opportunities and risks coexisting amid high capital expenditure.
Morgan Stanley recently released a preview report on Tesla's (TSLA.US) Q3 2026 earnings, shifting to a more constructive stance on Tesla while maintaining an Equal-weight rating.
Tesla, Inc. (TSLA.US) will report earnings after the bell next Wednesday (October 21), and Morgan Stanley has released a preview report on its Q3 2026 results. Morgan Stanley's stance on Tesla, Inc. has turned more constructive, maintaining an Equal-weight rating with a base case price target of $400, versus the current share price of $362.44. The report notes that large-scale Robotaxi deployment remains Tesla, Inc.'s core stock catalyst, with visible progress in the commercialization of the Cybercab robotaxi, but massive capital expenditure is draining cash flow, valuation pressure persists, and the stock's upside depends heavily on commercial validation of the physical AI business.
From an operating fundamentals perspective, the traditional vehicle business is showing strong resilience. In Q3 2026, Tesla, Inc. delivered 486,532 vehicles, down only slightly by 2% year over year, beating market expectations for two consecutive quarters. Elevated gasoline prices highlight the cost-of-use advantage of electric vehicles, and combined with a 55% FSD full self-driving take rate in North America, autonomy is becoming an important variable driving vehicle purchase demand.
However, the total cost of ownership of electric vehicles remains higher than that of gasoline cars, and industry purchase cost pressure has not yet been eliminated. The report forecasts automotive gross margin excluding credits at 16.4%, slightly below the market consensus, and the regulatory approval progress of FSD in Europe and China will become a key variable determining vehicle demand and profit margins.
Robotaxi is Tesla, Inc.'s most important stock catalyst. Fleet operating density in the Austin area has increased significantly, and the dawn of commercialization has appeared, but substantive verification is still needed in three dimensions: vehicle utilization, safety performance, and unit economics. The Cybercab fleet in the area grew 8x in 30 days, with fleet size exceeding 300 units, cumulative driverless miles exceeding 1 million, and a major breakthrough in urban operating density.
But the report warns that simply expanding fleet size does not equal commercial success, and the market needs to focus on vehicle utilization, safety performance, and unit economics. Compared with blindly expanding into Dallas and other Shenzhen New Land Tool Planning & Architectural Design, improving the operating quality of existing cities is more valuable for reference. By contrast, Optimus humanoid Siasun Robot&Automation remains under a cautious assessment, with uncertainty in supply chain, dexterity, and general task capabilities keeping its commercialization timeline unclear.
The integrated layout of energy storage, solar, and computing power synergy makes the energy business a second growth curve undervalued by the market, helping Tesla, Inc. transform into a comprehensive distributed computing power and electricity service provider. Energy storage, solar, and the modular AI computing power system Megapod together build a distributed power and computing business footprint, but quarterly shipments are highly volatile, and the business value needs to be viewed over the medium to long term.
The electric truck Semi has considerable economic benefits when combined with autonomous driving, with calculations showing that autonomy can increase per-vehicle annual profit 6x, making it another potential highlight. For the Optimus humanoid Siasun Robot&Automation business, the market should still maintain a cautious view, as significant uncertainty remains around the pace of commercialization and the ability to replicate at scale.
At the same time, Tesla, Inc. is under intense capital expenditure pressure. Capex in 2026 is expected to reach $26.4 billion, above the company's $25 billion guidance, with full-year free cash flow expected to be a net consumption of $11.7 billion. Funds are directed toward multiple fronts: Robotaxi, humanoid Siasun Robot&Automation, semiconductors, AI computing power, and energy storage. Against the backdrop of high capital expenditure, return on investment efficiency has become a core market concern. Although improved business execution has brought relatively optimistic expectations, continued cash burn and valuation constraints will still suppress the stock's short-term upside.
The report uses a sum-of-the-parts SOTP model. Within the base case $400 price target, the three AI-related businessesnetwork services, Robotaxi, and humanoid Siasun Robot&Automationtogether contribute $321, accounting for the vast majority of the valuation. The bull case price target could reach $835, while the bear case is only $129. The huge valuation range reflects the extremely high uncertainty of the AI business. Options market data shows only a 32.1% probability of the stock reaching $400 over the next 12 months, and downside risk cannot be ignored.
Overall, Tesla, Inc. has moved past the Robotaxi concept demonstration stage and entered a commercialization validation cycle. Vehicle delivery resilience underpins the base business, but high capital expenditure continues to consume cash. Looking ahead, the market is no longer satisfied with fleet expansion; utilization, safety metrics, and unit profitability models** will become the touchstone for judging the value of physical AI. If commercialization falls short of expectations, the high valuation will face re-rating risk; once the business model is proven, Tesla, Inc. will open up entirely new growth space. Investors need to rationally distinguish between technological progress and commercial realization, and objectively view the company's opportunities and risks.
