Challenging Blackstone and Apollo! Growth-oriented PE giant General Atlantic plans an IPO in 2027, with a valuation potentially reaching $10 billion.
According to foreign media reports, private capital group General Atlantic plans to launch an IPO in the first half of 2027, with a share issuance as early as the spring of 2027, and a valuation potentially reaching $10 billion.
Private capital group General Atlantic plans to launch an IPO in the first half of 2027, with a share sale as early as spring 2027 and a valuation potentially as high as $10 billion. The New York-based investment giant, which manages more than $130 billion in assets, is seeking to fund ambitious expansion plans and catch up with listed competitors such as Blackstone (BX.US) and Apollo Global Management Inc (APO.US).
General Atlantic's listing will provide funding support for its growth. In the $24 trillion private capital market, amid industry consolidation trends, only a handful of large listed institutions may dominate the sector in the future.
According to a source, the IPO will help the company further advance diversification, expand into new markets beyond private equity deals, and recruit talent to manage a broader client base, covering diverse needs from large sovereign wealth funds to wealthy individual investors.
General Atlantic was founded in 1980 and began as the family office of legendary philanthropist Chuck Feeney. Feeney is the co-founder of DFS Group, and the original purpose of founding the institution was not to maximize wealth, but to give back to philanthropy through investments in high-growth enterprises. For a long period in its early years, the company had no external LPs, with all funds coming from Feeney's personal wealth. It later gradually introduced diversified LPs such as global pensions, family funds, and endowments, transforming from a single-family capital office into a global asset management platform.
Today, General Atlantic has total global assets under management of approximately $130 billion and has deployed a cumulative $121 billion of capital. It operates across four complementary investment pillars: growth equity funds, private credit, the BeyondNetZero carbon neutrality-themed fund, and sustainable infrastructure funds. It has offices in more than 20 countries worldwide and more than 900 employees.
The New York-based investment firm manages more than $130 billion in assets and is known for "growth investing," meaning investing in fast-growing companies without taking controlling stakes. The institution was an early investor in internet giants such as Facebook (META.US) and Alibaba Group Holding Limited Sponsored ADR (BABA.US), as well as technology groups such as fintech company Klarna (KLAR.US) and cybersecurity company CrowdStrike (CRWD.US).
In recent years, General Atlantic has continued to increase its bets on the AI track, with a heavy position in leading global AI large-model company Anthropic. In May 2026, Anthropic jointly established an AI-native enterprise services company with Blackstone, Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., and others, with General Atlantic, as one of the core investors, committing $150 million. Company advisers believe that, as rising interest rates raise concerns about a backlog of unsold acquisitions, these AI investments will be more profitable than traditional leveraged buyouts.
General Atlantic initially confidentially submitted a listing application to regulators in 2023, but postponed the plan due to political turmoil involving GEO Group Inc and rising interest rates. Last year, the company hired former Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman as a strategic adviser to prepare for a listing.
It is understood that the company is currently targeting early 2027. If General Atlantic proceeds with a listing, it will become the first private equity firm focused on growth investing to go public, in sharp contrast to competitors such as Blackstone, KKR (KKR.US), and Apollo, which are regarded as pioneers of leveraged buyouts.
