The tense situation between the United States and Iran has escalated once again. The United States Central Command announced on Wednesday local time that the US military has launched a new round of military strikes against Iran following Iran's attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters. This is at least the fourth round of strikes since the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in mid-June. Currently, the retaliatory actions by both the US and Iran have not reached the level of intensity seen at the beginning of the conflict. Meanwhile, US President Trump stated that the ceasefire agreement reached between the US and Iran last month has "ended" and hinted that he will no longer seek a new agreement with Iran.
The US Central Command said on social media platform X that this latest US action is aimed at holding Iran accountable for recent "unprovoked attacks" against international commercial shipping and civilian sailors, emphasizing that the US will maintain the security of this important international maritime route.
Previously, the US accused Iran of attacking three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters on Tuesday. Following the incident, the US announced the cancellation of waivers for Iranian oil exports as part of the ceasefire agreement and carried out dozens of retaliatory airstrikes against Iranian military infrastructure and fast boats.
During a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump stated that due to the escalation of conflict in the Strait of Hormuz, the ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran has failed. "As far as I'm concerned, it's over," Trump said. "I'm not sure that I want to deal with them anymore. We can keep playing this game, but I think it's time to solve things once and for all."
When asked why there was a noticeable change in attitude towards Iran, Trump said that a month ago he praised Iranian leadership as "smart," "rational," and "easy to deal with," but recent actions by Iran in the past week or two have changed his view.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important energy transit routes and is at the core of the current US-Iran conflict. Iran had previously threatened to block the strait and planned to charge passing vessels a toll as a key bargaining chip against US military pressure. In response, the US briefly imposed a maritime blockade on Iranian ports.
According to the temporary ceasefire agreement reached last month, the US agreed to lift the maritime blockade, while Iran promised to make efforts to ensure the safe passage of commercial ships in the Gulf region.
However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Baghaei said on social media on Wednesday that the US had violated the agreement. He stated that the agreement specifically assigns Iran the responsibility to establish shipping arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz, and the US's unilateral actions and military strikes against Iran have undermined the framework of the agreement. Baghaei said that Iran will firmly defend national interests and sovereignty and will not accept external pressure.
The collapse of the US-Iran ceasefire agreement means that the Middle East situation is once again entering a highly tense state, and the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy transit route, faces new security risks. Future international oil supplies and global financial markets may once again be affected.
